SUMMARY:Poverty and Mental Health in the Aging Ethnic/Racial Populations
DESCRIPTION:The ripple effects of poverty on aging and vulnerable communities is profound. This course looks at the current situation of older adults in the US\, including racial and ethnic populations. We discuss the opportunities (greater longevity\, health care treatment changes\, insurance coverage) as well as the challenges that require attention and planning. We’ll explore health and social needs reported by the aging populations and look at how dedicated and cost-effective health care can be organized and easily adapted to sustain the steadily increasing aging ethnic and racially diverse population. The course will examine the effects of social determinants on the mental and physical health of aging populations to identify steps for a whole person approach to best care for our older populations. \nPresenter: Dr. Margarita Alegría\, Chief of the Disparities Research Unit at the Massachusetts General Hospital \n*You will need to create an account or log into your existing Conversations account to register for the training\, and will need to access that account for the live webinar.  \n 1.5 CEU credits for Social Work\, LMHC\, LADC\, Nursing

SUMMARY:Providing LGBTQ Affirmative and Inclusive Services in Healthcare Settings
DESCRIPTION:Providing LGBTQ Affirmative and Inclusive Services in Healthcare Settings\n(workshop for providers\, 1.5 CEU credits for Social Work\, LMHC\, LADC\, Nursing) \nThe complexity of sexual identity and gender expression for providers working with LGBTQ individuals can sometimes be confusing and challenging. This webinar will look at social and cultural variables\, mental health\, trauma and substance use\, as well as how specific risk behaviors can create barriers to the effectiveness of prevention and treatment. Providers will learn how to better serve their clients. \nIn this presentation Phil McCabe will detail essential terminology and provide a basis for understanding the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community when navigating our current healthcare system. The course is relevant for providers who serve older populations as well as youth. \nProviders need to understand the complexity of sexual identity and gender expression in working with LGBTQ individuals. Social and cultural variables\, mental health\, trauma and substance use\, in addition to specific risk behaviors can create barriers to the effectiveness of prevention messages and treatment interventions in helping clients to enact behavior changes. \n Presenter: Phil McCabe\, School of Public Health Workforce Development\, Rutgers University \nRegistration link \n *You will need to create an account or log into your existing Conversations account to register for the training\, and will need to access that account for the live webinar.
