Providing LGBTQ Affirmative and Inclusive Services in Healthcare Settings
(workshop for providers, 1.5 CEU credits for Social Work, LMHC, LADC, Nursing)

The complexity of sexual identity and gender expression for providers working with LGBTQ individuals can sometimes be confusing and challenging. This webinar will look at social and cultural variables, mental health, trauma and substance use, as well as how specific risk behaviors can create barriers to the effectiveness of prevention and treatment. Providers will learn how to better serve their clients.

In this presentation Phil McCabe will detail essential terminology and provide a basis for understanding the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community when navigating our current healthcare system. The course is relevant for providers who serve older populations as well as youth.

Providers need to understand the complexity of sexual identity and gender expression in working with LGBTQ individuals. Social and cultural variables, mental health, trauma and substance use, in addition to specific risk behaviors can create barriers to the effectiveness of prevention messages and treatment interventions in helping clients to enact behavior changes.

Presenter: Phil McCabe, School of Public Health Workforce Development, Rutgers University
