Poverty and Mental Health in the Aging Ethnic/Racial Populations
September 10, 2024 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
The ripple effects of poverty on aging and vulnerable communities is profound. This course looks at the current situation of older adults in the US, including racial and ethnic populations. We discuss the opportunities (greater longevity, health care treatment changes, insurance coverage) as well as the challenges that require attention and planning. We’ll explore health and social needs reported by the aging populations and look at how dedicated and cost-effective health care can be organized and easily adapted to sustain the steadily increasing aging ethnic and racially diverse population. The course will examine the effects of social determinants on the mental and physical health of aging populations to identify steps for a whole person approach to best care for our older populations.
